Apple announces ‘Time Flies’ event for September 15

Apple announced an event at 1PM ET/10AM PT on September 15th, named ‘Time Flies’. Apple normally announces new iPhones in September, but there are rumours of the phones being delayed this year. Rather, the tagline of the event, “Time Flies,” suggests that we are looking to a new Apple Watch.

The event takes place later than the usual September announcement for Apple’s fall lineup, probably due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that continues. Apple confirmed during its most recent earnings call that it would not ship its new phones in September.

While the cryptic invitation is, as usual, not overly detailed — like what products are expected to appear — for this fall, Apple is rumoured to have a full lineup of hardware, including four new iPhones, the Apple Watch Series 6, an updated iPad Air, a smaller HomePod, and possibly even a pair of Apple-branded over-ear headphones.

However, given the branding of “Time Flies,” Apple is likely to focus on the Apple Watch for this event, with Series 6 rumoured to add blood oxygen monitoring and enhanced sleep tracking, along with a faster processor. Also, Apple is rumoured to announce a cheaper substitute for the Series 3 model (which Apple still sells) during ‘Time Flies’.

Apple’s event stream’s YouTube page also gives hints at Apple Watch and iPad announcements. The event appears to list the keywords “Series 6” and “iPad Air.” Although it is worth noting that there are also a lot of other Apple terms, including iPhone, Apple TV and WWDC.

Apple is expected to announce four new iPhone models later this year: two cheaper, 5.4 “and 6.1” AND the iPhone 12 Pro models with 6.1 “and 6.7” screens. (Okay, so the 5.4-inch phone would be the smallest iPhone ever since the iPhone SE was released in 2016; the 6.7-inch model would be the biggest one ever.) But we’ll probably have to wait a few weeks for that official announcement.

And then, Apple has promised that we will also see the first fruits of its ARM-powered Apple silicon Macs before the end of the year, even though the hype machine has so far been silent on actual details.
