With the forthcoming release of the next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, the ‘Android’ competitor may not transcend the benchmark of the last-gen Apple A12X or the A13 bionic released in 2019 for the Apple’s iPad and the iPhone 11 series, respectively.
It is said that the tech giant is constructing something that could change the very concept of the mobile industry. For the first time in the smartphone industry, the iPhone 12 series would be coming with a processor of 5nm fabrication, beating its predecessors which have a 7nm processor.
‘nm’ or nanometer is a technical terminology that describes how tightly packed the transistors are placed inside the processor. The lesser the proximity between them, the faster the electrons move between them, which would mean lesser source of power will be wasted in transit.
The latest examination by the Macworld blogger Jason Cross states, “the A14 SOC could put the 15 inch MacBook Pro’s 6 core CPU to shame”.
Well, this can also mean that the A14 could be more capable than the 2018 iPad Pro’s A12X Bionic, which almost matched the benchmark scores of the 6-core i9 processor running in the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro.
Cross also expresses that the architectural upgrade from 7nm to 5nm might not appear to be a lot, but it is going to be a massive leap in terms of performance and efficiency metrics. This improved transitory density would give Apple an open space to make this future processor that has around 15 billion transistors (the A13 has around 8.5 billion transistors) which would definitely indicate an evident escalation in the processor’s performance in the multi-core classification of testing. With the Snapdragon 865 finally catching up to the A13 bionic, a newer-generation manufacturing node would mean Apple will be able to increase multi-core performance by a significant margin.
With all the current rumours it is expected the A14 bionic to catch up to 4700-5000 points in the Geekbench 5’s multi-core test results. A leaked Snapdragon 865 benchmark score on Samsung Galaxy S20 reached up to 3000 points almost surpassing the Apple A12 SOC released in the year 2018. Therefore as mentioned earlier the A14 bionic has the potential to be an equivalent to the 6 core MacBook Pro processor.
This does not mean that the A14 bionic can be a substitute or an alternative to the MacBook processor, The Intel i9 Processors are much more capable than a mobile processor.
It is rumoured that the iPhone 12 Pro might probably be shipped with a 6GB of RAM, which could evidently make the iPhone 12 Pro one of the most powerful device if not the most. But such a powerful processor would unquestionably come with a burdensome price tag and Apple has never disappointed in doing so.
This does not mean that Apple is unchallenged. it is reported that Huawei’s Kirin 1020 also will be shipping with a 5nm processor, optimised with its own User Interface and Operating System, the Harmony OS. It looks like Huawei may be the subsequent challenge Apple would need to face. A rumoured Snapdragon 875 may get into the competition.
In short, in the year 2020, the smartphone competition might not be limited between Apple and Snapdragon processors and the future of MacBook processors seems to have a renovation in store for them. Will Apple deliberate over building its own MacBook processors once again?
